British Camping Ideas: Experience TV Locations
Most people have a favourite television programme. If you want to do something different this year, you could take a look around the locations of where your favourites are filmed and explore their local area.
Broadchurch
This crime whodunnit drama stars the popular duo of Olivia Colman and David Tennant. You’ll find the filming location just outside Bridport in the seaside town of West Bay. There’s a campsite at Charmouth that is open between March and October that is dog friendly and ideally located for great fishing and walking.
Doc Martin
If the tactless and grumpy Doc Martin is more your style, then Cornwall it is! Martin Clunes plays the local GP who has relocated to the fictional village of Portwenn. The programme is filmed in Port Isaac. At Bude you’ll find a pet-friendly campsite that has access to local eateries and provides a great base for visiting anywhere in Cornwall. Alternatively opt for Tregurrian campsite so you’ll be located close to 14 different beaches.
Blackadder
Blackadder with Rowan Atkinson was filmed in Northumberland at Alnwick Castle. The local campsite is Dunstan Hill which is great for dogs, cycling, pubs and beaches. There’s also a very nice woodland walk available to campers.
Emmerdale
This popular soap opera is filmed in the Yorkshire Dales. The exterior scenes are filmed in the village of Esholt, whose pub has taken on the name of ‘The Woolpack Inn’. You could stay at the campsite at Boroughbridge which is on the River Ure and great for walking and dogs. Or you might want to stay at the campsite at Clitheroe which is great for fishing and water sports.
Downton Abbey
The Crawley family and their servants reside at the beautiful Highclere Castle, known as Downton Abbey in this favoured programme. Most outdoor scenes are filmed in Bampton, Oxfordshire and also in Berkshire. You can find campsites at Oxford, Devizes or Salisbury.
